Q. Where is the school located?
A. Canadian Health Care Academy is located in New Westminster, BC. Our address is #93 – 6th Street and we are located between Royal Avenue and Agnes Avenue. We are just 5-minutes walking distance up the hill from Columbia Station.
Q. Where can I park?
A. Although we do not have a parking lot, there is street parking in the vicinity and the public parking garage at 6th and Columbia offers monthly discounts when you present your CHCA student card.
Q. What does it cost?
A. Canadian Health Care Academy is comparable to other private institutions in the lower mainland. Please contact an admissions representative directly for up-to-date tuition & supply costs.
Q. Why is your tuition different than Public Schools?
A. Public colleges and universities receive funding from the government for each student they receive. This money helps reduce the costs for the building, utilities and especially the instructors as the majority of instructors belong to government unions and associations. As a private school, we are privately owned and operated and receive no funding from the provincial or federal government. As such, tuition money is used to cover all costs associated with the college and programs.
Q. Can I meet with someone one-on-one to discuss my transcripts and take a tour of the facility?
A. Yes, appointments can be made with one of our admission specialists during regular office hours of 8-4:30 Mon-Fri. After-hour appointments can be made on an individual basis with advanced notice.
Q. Can I receive information about a program through the mail or email?
A. Yes, please call or email us your information and what course you would like to learn more about. And don’t forget to mention where you heard about CHCA.
Q. What training / backgrounds do the CHCA instructors come from?
A. All of our instructors are professionals in the medical / dental field. We have RN’s, LPN’s and Dental Assistants on staff to teach you their profession.
Q. What is the Scope of Practice of a Practical Nurse?
A. The scope of practice for LPN’s has expanded over the years. For the most current information, please view the CLPNBC website at www.clpnbc.org
Q. What are the hours of classes?
A. Our classes run weekdays from 8 – 4:30PM. Depending on the program, the classes can run 2-5 days per week. Currently, our Biology 12 (Pre-Nursing) class is the only course offered outside these hours. Biology is run in the evenings from 6-9:30 three nights a week.
Q. What does the clinical portion of our classes look like?
A. Within the first 8 weeks of theory classes, our students will be put into a clinical facility on a weekly basis with an instructor. Here students will be practicing and performing newly learned skills with real clients. Practicing on the job skills which you learn in our training lab earlier that week with enable you to commit those skills to memory. Clinical placements have different hours than our regular classes. They can run any day (Mon-Sun) and the schedule may be 7-3PM, 3-11PM or 7AM-7PM depending on the clinical location and in which term the class takes place.
Q. Do we get to choose where we go for clinical and/or perceptorship placements?
A. No, unfortunately, with the amount of health care students in the lower mainland all placements are put through a central placement system called HSPnet. We try our best to locate facilities where the highest degree of learning will be available to our students. We also take into account where our students live and their transportation needs, however, we can not guarantee location for any one student.
Q. Are you a public or a private school?
A. Canadian Health Care Academy is a private school. We are accredited with PCTIA, the governing body that guarantees that private institutions are teaching quality programs with the same standards across the board.
Q. Can I get a student loan or government funding for your programs?
A. Yes, our full time programs are eligible for Federal and BC Student Loans. As well, all of our students may contact HRDC and / or the Employment Insurance Agency to see if they qualify for part time and full time funding..
